Would you go out of your way to...?

Just curious about how people here feel about the possibility of volunteering to do something that would reduce eco degradation or contribute toward the restoration of the planet's natural health and equilibrium.

I'm speaking about the things that might be outside of lifestyle & consumer choices and habits.

Would you (or do you) volunteer time & energy if something was explained, to your satisfaction, as being valuable?

Although I do not, many in my area take an active part in planting and maintaining areas. One of the reasons I have not is that many of the people planning the activities, not the ones that do things every day to improve our world, do not seem to have a clue to the interactions of what they are doing. An example is a group planted a hillside of trees for erosion but then killed all of the trees when they had herbicide sprayed to kill the under growth. Then they go to the newspaper and ask for donations to replace the trees rather than preparing the ground to receive the trees before planting.

I do the normal things like picking up trash etc. But as you stated IF the planning was valuable and not a temporary solution without long term goals, NO.

Thanks, maifleur.

I'm surprised by only a single response, so far, to the question.

I wanted to make it clear that I wasn't putting forward a 'trick question' intended to snag people into volunteering for something that I had in mind. Just wanted to know whether, outside of consumer choices, people had a vounteering attitude toward environmental improvement.

Unfortunately, this forum is one of the slowest/least active forums I visit on GW - which I find sad because I had really high hopes for a very active, involved forum when it first started. That's probably why you haven't gotten any answers.

Anyway, in my neck of the woods, there don't seem to be too many of these organized efforts to volunteer for. We have a yearly clean-up of areas in my town every April, usually involving groups such as scouts or corporations which have put together a team. And we have a local adopt-a-garden program, where people and/or groups can volunteer to beautify corners or curbsides, etc. - just little touches here and there around the town.

But other than that, there's not much going on. So now, lol, I'm sure you're going to ask why I don't get involved in organizing such things. Time. (I work 4 jobs in summer!) But I have been organizing enviromentally-oriented programs/talks at my local library, so I try to do my part in spreading the word.

And yes, I think if an environmentally worthwhile volunteer opportunity came up, I do think I would volunteer, time and schedule permitting.

:)
