they are called string bags

| It wouldn't let me make another post to the existing thread. Here is a link to one place which sells string bags, and other types of reusable bags. Might be able to get them for less money elsewhere, if you do a search. Although given the longevity of the string bag I used to have, maybe the price isn't so bad.

Lorna, I've seen people carrying these at the farmer's market. These would be great to put produce in at the store - probably lightweight enough where it wouldn't make much difference on the scale. The cashiers would love it - they wouldn't have to go chasing after my loose potatoes as they roll down the belt, lol! BTW, if you change the heading in the "Subject of Posting" box, you can make another post to a thread. :) Dee

See? Another post, seconds after I posted. I wanted to add that for some reason, these bags seem very 70's to me. Perhaps I'm having flashbacks of macrame, lol! :) Dee

I used to use a string shopping bag in the 70s, so if you were shopping back then, Dee, you probably saw them. I lived in Berkeley at the time, one of the centers of hippiedom/back to the land movement/ecology/alternative health practices. String bags are supposed to be able to hold up to 40 pounds. However, I found that if I stuffed mine as full as it could be, it was too darned heavy to carry with one hand. I think I'll be giving these as gifts this Christmas to some of my old friends, who will remember them from our Berkeley days. :-) Thanks for the tip about being able to make a second post. Lorna

I've had these string bags for many years. They are still like new and extremely useful/ lightweight and easy to stuff anywhere for storage. Last year I gave them to most family members as Christmas gifts. Great, long-lasting product that has saved many plastic bags in my household. Anna

I used to crochet string bags during college for Christmas and Birthday gifts. Of course, back then they were made with all sorts of strange colored yarn (the 70's). I was thinking the other day that I might like to make some more. I'm getting back into my needlecraft, knitting my own dishclothes, etc.

I was looking at knitting patterns on a free pattern Web site the other day. I'd like to make a vest. I knitted a hat last year, but otherwise haven't done much knitting in about six years. Lorna
