Where to recycle printer ink cartridges in the south Bay Area?

I was taking them to Office Max or Office Depot, but now you have to go through a rigamarole to do this. Any ideas? Don't want them to go to China or India, to be taken apart! Rather, I hope they can be refilled for someone. Not trusting the "fundraising" companies.

When I worked at UCB, we sent the copier cartridges back to the manufacturer. There was a return label inside of each new box we bought. We reused the box the new one came in to ship the old one back. It was a prepaid label.

Check with the manufacturer of your printer cartridges, they might have a recycling program. I don't understand the concern about how they are reused. Don't the office stores give $3 for each cartridge turned in?

Well, Office Whatever now has you join their program, (no thanks,) then says it's a rebate deal. Just rubs me the wrong way. I read on-line that some of the cartridges in the so-called fund-raising programs are sent to a third-world country where workers take them apart. That doesn't sound good. Maybe I'll see if Cartridge World will just take them or I'll try and contact HP. Thanks.

sjerin: Out of curiosity, why exactly don't you want cartridges going to third-world countries? I tried googling, but the only thing I found was to make sure that you recycle cartridges so that they don't get dumped in third-world countries as technological waste. If your cartridges do find their way over there, it sounds as if they would help provide work and income for otherwise struggling people.

Nevertheless, you might want to look into your local freecycle chapter. Someone might be interested in buying your used cartridges for refilling. Long shot, but worth a try.

In our area, we have a place called Rapid Refill which sells refilled ink. You can take your old one(s) in and buy already filled ones off the rack. There isn't any incentive or reward for doing so, other than keeping them out of the landfill. Perhaps you have a similar store?

D'oh. I just reread my message. Clearly, someone at freecycle wouldn't be interested in buying anything. I meant they might be interested in taking your cartridges. Oops.

Oh no! I meant that I wouldn't want anyone to take apart the toxic parts; I read this on a page when I tried googling "recycling printer ink cartridges." No, I don't want anything for them, just don't want them to go into the landfill. I feel so lucky that our Radio Shack takes used batteries-- wish they'd take these cartridges too! Thanks for all the suggestions.

Check your phone book. There is a store a few towns over - not sure if it is office supply stuff or they only do the ink cartridges - but you can return your cartridges there and like aok says, you can buy new refilled ones, or you can have yours refilled while you wait.

You might have something similar in your area.

I just dropped them off at Cartridge World, where the kid behind the desk assured me they will refill and sell them. Thanks, all.
