Eco-Nest or other light clay building?

| I'm giving serious thought to building a new house in the next few years. The kids are grown and we won't need this much space. I've been looking at timberframe construction for its beauty and durability, ideally using reclaimed timber. I just don't like the idea of using SIPs for the walls. So not green. I've been looking around for alternatives and have found light clay, a mixture of clay with either straw or wood chip, something like cob. Eco-Nest is one company that does this.
Before I get much deeper into my investigation, I would love to hear from some brave soul who has walked this road before me. Any comments?

| Rosefolly, I've been watching this thread for replies, only because this seems like an interesting topic. I don't know how many people have walked this road yet, though! It's all kind of new - well, very old, but very new, lol. I'm sure I'm gonna say a big "doh!" when you answer, but what are "SIPs"? :) Dee |

| Hi Dee -- SIPs are Structural Insulated Panels. They are very strong and also energy efficient, so they are gaining in popularity. However, they are made of either expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) or polyurethane foam. Sort of like styrofoam. I can understand why some people like them, but I don't. I prefer to use materials a little closer to natural materials except where the synthetic material is vastly superior. In this case, I suspect there are viable natural alternatives. I never heard of SIPs myself until a couple of years ago when I fell in love with timberfame and began to do the research. Rosefolly |
