I need help with woodburning my gourds

I have painted gourds for years. I really enjoy it but this past weekend I tried tracing a pattern on a piece and then woodburning it on the gourd. That part worked fine - it looked okay. But I would like to paint the picture (this is just a practice flower) inside the woodburned parts. I thought the wood burned part needed to be "deeper" so that the crevice could actually be seen, but it just made the lines fatter and it looks really bad. If I paint the flower after doing the woodburning (before I made the lines fatter) then it would cover up the actual wood burned lines wouldn't it? I'd really like to do this but I'm not having any luck. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.:)
