Problem with large gourds busting

I grew 9 large gourds this last year they are from 49 inches to 65 inches. So far I have had 4 of them either split or have a very thin shell. What causes this and what can I do to prevent this in my next crop. They did not set fruit until the first of July, would this have anything to do with it.

Hi Phyllis,
I think we need a little more info to figure this out.
What are your weather conditions, and where are your gourds as they are drying?
When did you harvest your gourds? And, what experiences have you had with past crops?
