I had a lot of trouble growing pumpkins from seed. All vines and flowers but no pumpkins. Someone told me there were male and female seeds and you need both to actually get pumkins. Any one have any suggestions on successful pumpkin growing?

Nope, pumpkins like all other squash have male and female blossoms on each plant. Biggest problem is pollination since apparently you have good vines and blossoms. They are insect pollinated, bees and similar insects. Some folks resort to hand pollination, which means taking pollen from a male from a male flower and putting in a female blossom. The females are easily identified because they will have a baby pumpkin behind the blossom.

I live in upstate NY and decided to grow pumpkins this year.

I planted a 30 foot by 30 foot patch in full sun and have good vines and many flowers. However, it is almost mid July and I am yet to see a female flower on any of my vines. Is this common?
