cooking a squash today-suprise!

Snow day!! Thought I'd roast a squash but the seeds are sprouting. Think I'll let them grow for awhile then transplant. Anyone try this? It's about 3 to 4 mths till planting time

Hi Robin,

'Hope your squash turned out yummy.

It's hard for me to resist planting squash seeds in the middle of winter, too, especially when I'm doing germination tests on them. So far, I've restrained myself, though. It's my understanding that cucurbits generally don't appreciate having their roots disturbed. I try not to let them go more than a couple weeks in their newspaper pots in the spring before planting them out. On the other hand, you're not really out anything if you give it a try. Plus, it's nice to have something growing in the winter, besides icicles, of course. Do you have a very sunny spot in your home and a pretty big pot? Do you know what kind of squash you have?

Oh, my! Great picture. That must have given you a bit of a start :) It reminds me of an ear of corn I dumped in the compost bucket last summer after cutting the kernels off. When I went out to empty the bucket a few days later, I saw the cob had sprouted. Made me jump, lol.

What kind of squash was it? Was it in a warm storage area? Or maybe the fruit was starting to fade and generated enough heat to wake the seeds up?

I found an ear of corn in the compost pile from the previous year that had every kernel sprouted! This squash was sitting on my coffee table with 2 others in the front room. Temp is about 65 all winter. I've had em turn to mush but this is the first sprouting for me. I grow a few squash and I purchase many at the local farmers market-the more unsual the better. Thanks for posting
