Does the package say how far the vines are likely to run? I'm not personally familiar with growing gourds, but if I were growing one of my long-vined, winter squash favorites in a plot like that I'd put them in the middle and regularly turn back any vines that tried to escape.

If you're gentle you can pick up the end of a wandering cucurbit vine, re-aim it where you want it, and use a stick or a pair of sticks to pin it in place.

Thank you iam3! I will try them in the center and see what happens! I've never had a community plot before or had to worry about encroaching on anyone else!

I have grown both of these varieties and they are very prolific growers. If you only have plot of 20 ft by 20 ft I would plant in center and plant as soon as soil warms up as both of these take around 120 days to produce full sized gourds and be able to cure in the fall.
Don't know if your community plot lets you put up any fencing as we have grown both of these up 6 foot tall fences and the vines are vigorous and sturdy enough to support the growing gourds on it and lets you go vertical and contain the vines if you ran fencing up both sides of your plot.
Otherwise if the vines start growing into neighboring plots you can nip end of vines off and bury into the dirt. That will give you larger gourds and allow you to contain vines.

Sue..thank you for your reply. The plot hasn't even been dug yet but I am hopeful that it will soon be done. So far we don't have fencing yet either. I will follow the suggestions of planting in the middle and trimming any wandering vines.
