Planting in Sacramento? How early is too early?

Any of you gourders out there live in or around Sacramento, CA? I'm curious when you put your plants/seeds in the ground. I usually don't get started until May or June, but this year I want to get going early. I'm not sure when it's safe to plant them though. How early is too early? Any suggestions? Thanks! :)
