Do you plant your seeds on edge or flat side up?

I have started planting large, flat seeds like squash seeds with the edge up instead of the flat side up. Just seems to me it would be easier for the seedling to push its way up through the soil if it didn't have to lift as much dirt. So far it seems to be working pretty good. Has anyone tried various orientations of the seed and did any work better than others? I was thinking of trying the rounded end down too. Seems pointed end down would be the worst orientation because the seedling would have a tough time pulling out of its seed coat.
