Tip on growing squash??

I read in a magazine to dig a hole, place a garden centre pot (empty and large) in the middle surround with soil, with top a couple inches above ground level, and plant seeds in three sections around pot, thinning to one plant in each section. Put compost in the pot and water through pot. Does anyone do this? Thanks.

Not exactly, but I have done something similar. I reuse plastic containers and create a very similar cutworm/snail barrier. I've always put the containers over the seeds in an upside down fashion.
