an issue of space

Hi all,

This year, my plan is to plant squash (butternut, buttercup) in rows of hills, the rows being spaced about 6-8 feet apart.

My question to you all is, are there things I can plant between the rows of squash that wont be overcome by the vines? I know corn and beans are useful with squash, but I don't have any need for them.

What do you think? Could I put in some seedlings before the squash that would grow tall, like tomatoes or peppers?
