First time growing these vegetables

I have always started peppers and tomatoes indoors under lights and this year I decided to try, gourds, a small melon, Waltham Squash, and cucumbers. I am up North in Canada and decided to start all of these seeds indoors under lights as well. They all germinated well, are potted up, but I've recently been told that this is not a good idea, that they won't transplant well. I feel I need to start them early because we have such a short growing season. I plan to harden them off before planting out like I do my tomatoes and peppers. So, is this a good idea? Will I lose them all and have to start over outdoors when it warms up? My frost free date is May 6. How long should I wait for the ground to warm up before planting out?

Thanks in advance.

Northerner.
