Pinch off vines to encourage branching?

I'm planning to grow my squashes and cukes on a wide, 5' tall trellis. When they reach the top, I'd like to pinch off the ends of the vines so that more vine "branches" grow from beneath and fill out the trellis horizontally. Will this work, or will pinching off the growing tip stop the plant from growing altogether?

Probably won't. But personally I would recommend letting them be, unless they head off where you don't want them to go.

Thanks, George. I was worried about them spilling back down over the sides of the trellis. But I suppose the worst that could happen is that they would reach the ground, or grab on to the trellis and climb back up.
