By now, your problem is probably solved, but I find it quite interesting. It has been my observation that squash produce many more male blossoms than female, and they tend to open a few days sooner than female ones. Good luck! Bill

thanks for writing back. problem solved. it didn't work too well. however, i now have more male blossoms opening than female blossoms. i do have a bunch of female blossoms though and i am still hand pollinating. i am producing alot of very healthy squash.
in the future, i will know that until the male blossoms open, it is not worth it to waste them in this manner.
you're right. everything i've ever heard says that the males should have been opening first. it didn't start out this way for me, but the males have definitely made a u-turn and are opening now. cooked a bunch of squash up today for a family bbq. home grown is definitely the way to go. thanks again.

The female blossoms do not open up for pollination. They are closed and later rot off. Bees could not enter to pollinate.
What is causing this to happen?

If the plants are not healthy enough, they will often abort early female blossoms and then don't open up, srivel up, and die. Nothing to be worried about yet. How are they doing now?
