Got any gourd advice?

Taken on a bit of a challenge, gourd growing wise, the full sorry tale of which you can read at the link below.

Has anyone got any really special tricks to growing big and healthy gourds? I'm after that clincher that'll see me through to a win.

Thanks for the advice weirdtrev... quote: 'you must be too excited'. Maybe it's something to do with our Queen's Diamond Jubille celebrations we've just completed over the weekend.

Our Flower & Produce Show has a class for squashes and gourds, the key criteria being size and quality. Another class is for the weirdest shaped vegetable. I've included links to photos of last year's class entries below, the gourds in each photo are all mine.
