Thinning pumpkin plants?

I took an old pumpkin from last fall and threw it in my garden during the winter. It's growing like crazy and looks like a big bush, 12"+ high, but hasn't spread out with vines in ground yet. I haven't done anything to it, but since most of the seeds were in a small area a lot of plants are growing in one area. Is this problem? Does it need to be thinned out? I didn't have time to get a picture this mornig but can this afternoon if needed. Thanks
