How do you know if gourds are ripe? In Phoenix Az we do not get frost. the gourds will grow 10 months or longer. So when do I pick them and start drying

RE: ripe gourds

I pick my gourds (hard shelled and ornamental) when the tendril next to the gourd turns brown. I hear the shell is thicker if you leave them on until frost kills the plants. But I like having gourds sitting around in the fall (or late summer) and it seems like a waste to me to leave the gourds in the field until they are all moldy and brown.
