Question about damaged Winter Squash Vine

I have a Winter Squash(could be pumpkin...or not) volunteer growing in my garden right along the gate. Yesterday we found that the squash has been wrapping it's tendrils thru the gate, and we needed to move them. So my son unwrapped the tendrils gently, and as we were opening the gate to give the vine some type of alternate support to cling to, the vine bent over and a small slit formed in it. My son and I staked it up immediately, but now I am wondering if this is an automatic death sentence to the vine and the baby squash that was just forming on the end of it.

Donna :)
