Soft spot on pumpkin help...

lsst

I am growing a Weeks Giant pumpkin and have one that is on bare soil. The node next to the pumpkin stem has a root that has already rooted into the ground

I felt underneath the pumpkin and felt a soft spot.

I can not lift the pumpkin as it has rooted very closely to the stem. The pumpkin is about the diameter of a salad plate.

Should I cut the root to check and lift up the pumpkin or should I just monitor the soft spot by feeling it?

What is the best thing to put under a growing pumpkin to prevent rot from the wet ground?

Thanks in advance!
