1st Time Gourder - Seeds were eaten by critters!

Well, a few weeks ago, I prepped the area, planted the seeds, lightly mulched, watered well... I lined the area with large rocks... It looked soooo pretty!

I could have sworn last night that I saw green peaking thru the soil. I was very excited.

This morning when I went out to water - the whole area is dug up. The soil and mulch is upturned. Every seed is gone!

We have a ton of deer coming into our yard. Do deer eat the seeds? Something must have tasted them and decided they were yummy.

I don't have many squirrels. We do have skunk, oppossum, rabbits and probably some other critters hanging around at night.

I've purchased a versi-tool, and I was going to try woodburning dry gourds. (I've been sketching patterns for weeks...)

I cannot plant until next week, as I will be out of town this weekend.

If I replant 07/09, will they have time to grow big enough for picking and crafting?

How do you keep your seedlings safe?
