Burgess Buttercup Harvest Questions

MrClint

Looks like harvest time is close for my buttercup squashes. They were direct planted around St. Patrick's Day. It's amazing -- the lack of harvest info on winter squash for long/warm season growers. Most info relates to fall harvest after 1st frost. I've probably got time for another crop before winter at this point.

At any rate, the stems on the fruits closest to the base are corking/splitting and the nearest tendrils are drying up (much like watermelons). Is it possible for buttercups to "cook" in the sun while waiting to ripen? How would I know if I waited too long? I do have a few with yellow "sunspots", is that normal? Thanks!
