Puritan Butternut Seedling - Fertilize?

So I'm going to try my hand at growing a butternut from a container up a trellis.

I've read in this forum that it's not the easiest thing to do - but I'll give it a shot.

MY QUESTION: How often to fertilize? And what type of fertilizer? I have the miracle-gro tomato plant food already on hand - is that usable? The plant is about 8 inches tall right now.
