Males usually come first. Females have little baby fruits on them (underneath the petals) that would grow into fruit once pollinated.

So a male would look like vine > flower, female would be vine > lil baby pumpkin like ball/bud, then flower. There are tons of examples on the web. Those all look like males from here, can't see the faded bloom, but I would assume male as well. They tend to far outnumber females on any given vine, from what I gather.
