EDIBLE GARDENSSummer Crops: How to Grow Squash
Almost foolproof and with cheerful flowers, squash comes in a wide range of varieties to plant in spring
Full StoryHello! I live in southeastern Wisconsin and I have decided to grow some squash in a pot this year. The squash I planted is Lake Valley Seed 'Early Prolific Straightneck Squash.' One squash plant is growing in a 9 inch pot. The plant has gotten very big and gets morning-noon sun. It is producing fruit, however, they only get a few inches long before they start getting soft and squishy on the end with the flower. I have been cutting off the fruits once they are showing signs of deterioration. Cutting them open reveals mold and a hollow inside. The plant is getting plenty of water. There are no signs of borers. Any idea what is going on? I have zucchini growing in a separate pot (same size pot) right next to it, which is doing excellent; I have harvested many healthy, large fruit from it already. But I have not gotten one good squash yet.
