Pumpkins, Squash & Gourds

Age-old question but I'm impatient...

I know that this has been posted a few times before, but will someone please explain why I have dozens of male blossoms on all 12 of my pumpkin plants, and NO female ones?? I thought by now I'd have at least one.

I'm wondering if there's a specific amount of time squash have before they produce female flowers? I wouldn't be opposed to yummy recipes for these, so far, useless male blossoms. Thanks in advance!

(Also...a few of my Rouge Vif D'Etampes have leaves that are yellowing just on the edge of the leaf, but all around the entire perimeter of the leaf. Is this just sun scald or could it be a virus?)

It is normal for pumpkins and squashes to put out the males first. I'm sure it has something to do with attracting a quantity of pollinators before the real show begins. Take advantage of those blossoms and eat them. They are fabulous.

I wouldn't be too worried about your Cinderella either. However, yellowing might indicate a lack of nitrogen. Have you had excessive rain?? If it worsens, give it a little shot of N and see if it greens up.

Huh, I hadn't thought of a lack of Nitrogen, but yes, Cincinnati had the wettest April/May on record. Good thinking!
