Stoopid squash, learn to climb!

I have three nice kabocha-type squash plants growing in my small urban garden right now. I made a novel trellis-thingy by bending two pvc pipes into arches, setting them up so that they form an arched structure with wooden slats spaced about 6 inches apart attached between the arch-supports. The trellis itself is sturdy (The PVC is anchored into the ground with rebar), although it may prove to be way too small for the plants in the long run.

Anyway, the plants seem to have a hard time actually grabbing onto the trellis. We keep training them up the thing with twine (otherwise the plants would sprawl outside the garden), but for some reason the climbing tendril thingies are not grabing onto the wooden slats.

SO the questions are: 1) will the dang vines eventually figure out how to anchor themselves to the wooden slats? and 2) if we have to keep training the vine with twine, when some fruit actually sets, will the vine not be able to support them?

Perhaps pics would be in order... I'll see if I can find some.
