Gourds shriveling up

artfart

This is my first year growing gourds, or trying to. I have a few gourds up to about 10 inches or so in diameter but the majority (probably 80 to 85 percent) of new gourds shrivel and die within a week or ten days. I am hand pollinating. I have heavy clay soil which I amended with steer manure. I water for about 2 to 2&1/2 hours every day giving each hill about 8 to 10 gallons a day. The soil dries out on the top 3 to 4 inches but stays quite wet down deeper. The soil has become quite compacted.

Any idea what's going on, or it normal to lose this many?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Amy
