squash flower never opened; rotted.

I have a zucchini acorn hybrid growing, and some of the fruit take two to three weeks of growing before they open a flower. Others take a day or two. One of them took weeks and the flower never opened. The flower started turning brown so I cut the flower open and the inside parts were rotten. I assume this 'baby' squash is toast (despite being rather large). Any ideas what's causing these strange happennings with my immature squash?
