Last year, I went to an event where a seed company had a booth. They had these seed packets that did not have their logo on them, and said that you could take one packet. I took a packet that said 'ornamental gourd mix' and planted some of the seeds. The resulting gourds that came up were goblin egg gourds and warty pear gourds. The egg gourds got no more than a 2 in. diameter and 3 in. long. I reseeded some of the egg gourds this year, and only one came up. However, the plant decided that SMALL egg gourds don't exist and it is producing a gourd the size of a basket ball. I have fed it no fertilizer, and have left it alone, not even really weeding around it. Why has this happened? (not that I'm complaining, I would like to know so that I can repeatedly get these large gourds.)
