Flowers on still-small squash plants -- pinch or leave them be?

Hello --

Due to the mostly-horrible growing season in Maine up until yesterday (basically five weeks or so of almost non-stop rain) and a redone garden space, I'm only now finishing putting things in my garden. I have several squash plants (both winter squash and zucchini) that were only transplanted within the past week or so. A couple of them have a number of flower buds on them, but the plants themselves are still very small (like less than a foot). Should I pinch off these initial flowers so that the plant can put energy first into building the root system, or should I just let them be?

Also, has anyone had success growing winter squash in containers?

Thanks much! -- Valerie
