Pumpkins, Squash & Gourds

care for growing pumpkins

I am new to growing pumpkins. I have a very nice patch with healthy vines growing everywhere. I cannot get to the middle for all of the vines and leaves. There are many new fruits coming in, but is there something I should do for them. Are they ok to lay on the ground? Should I place something under them to prevent decay? Can I use a general insect spray to keep bugs at bay?

I had a small issue with slugs when my plants were young but generally I haven't needed any insecticides or anything. The fruits are perfectly fine resting on the ground but you may want to put a small piece of cardboard between them and the soil to prevent discoloration. The shape is usually pretty good as long as the pollination is excellent. Weird asymmetrical fruit shapes usually derive from poor pollination more than laying on the ground.
