Mystery plant

Anyone know what this is? I didn't plant it (or anything related within 5+ feet of where it's growing). The plant leaves look like my yellow summer squash. It has long vines (5-10ft+) and little curly things that attach to everything. Is it edible? I cut one open and my friend tried it, but it was very bitter. Does that mean it's too ripe or not ripe enough (if it's edible)?? I do have zucchini in my garden this year, but last year there was only summer squash. Also, I dumped some pumpkin insides into the garden last December, I believe. I just can't figure it out...
