Pumpkins, Squash & Gourds

Very few female flowers to pollinate

I'm growing zucchini and crookneck squash. Each morning there are several male flowers but seldom any female flowers.
How do I enhance the production of female flowers??

Exactly my problem as well. I had one (1) female flower in a total of 2 squash plants, the rest were male. This poor flower dropped off and the fruit behind it began to rot! I have no idea how to produce more female flowers and more importantly, one of the plants seems to be rotting at the base. I have these plants on the ground of my backyard with no mulching. Is there a ground cover I should have used to protect the base of the plants? All other plants are doing well (save one tomato plant which didnt grow that tall, although it has fruit). Please help. Also--is it too late to buy another squash plant at this time of year? I live in NJ.
