Saving Cucuzza Seed?

bigoledude

An older Sicilian guy who grew cucuzza, told me years ago to allow the 'gagootza" gourd to get hard and, allowed to dry the entire fall and winter with the seeds inside. He also told me that he always considered his cucuzza germination rate poorer when compared to other open pollinated vegetables.

In order to have the most viable seeds, should the cucuzza get hard while on the vine? The few I've left on the vines so far have not formed a hard "shell". Will they eventually get hard while still on the vine?

What is the best step-by-step procedure to save cucuzza seed?
