Don't pick it! They ripen very poorly off the vine. Try putting a tuna can, or some other solid object, right under the pumpkin, to keep it up off the ground. Leave it on the vine until you cannot perforate the skin with a fingernail. It is very important that the fruit have the benefit of all the nutrients a vine can offer.

Haven't tested the skin's toughness yet.
The vine grew over a bush so the pumpkin is hanging. Made a hammock for it.
Damn those pickle worms!
