I doubt that the trellis is necessary. But you may have problems since your warm weather probably won't last long enough to mature fruit. I would have planted them by the first or, at the latest, second week of July.

If you can drive a few T posts and run some wire fence or put up some cattle panel between the T posts, that would be a quick trellis.

We made teepees using bamboo and twine. We wrapped some twine around the teepee for the vines to cling to. But you don't HAVE to grow them vertically. They should be fine on the ground.

I agree with George, though. You may be a bit late to see any mature pumpkins. I try to err on the early side with pumpkins and winter squash since they'll keep for months (I already have four pumpkins sitting in the basement, just waiting for halloween!).

And we were told that baby pumpkins would be fine if they were planted by the beginning of August?? Is this not a true statement??

Just if anyone else wants to continue on the string, I made my trellis for my beans out of Concrete wire and t-posts. It was cheap and easy. You can buy concrete wire at home depot.

As long as your area doesn't receive a killing frost before the pumpkin skins harden and color up, and the stems harden... you should be ok. Although, you won't get pumpkins as big or as plentifully as you might have if you'd planted in July.
