Early in the season I had tiny squash that didn't ever grow; my garden book explained that this was due to the absence of male blossoms to pollinate them. I removed those first few fruits. Then male and female blossoms started emerging together and we had a couple weeks of plentiful squash. Now most of my first succession of summer squash (yellow crookneck and patty-pan--the zucchini are fine) are loaded with male blossoms and have few or no fruits set.

These squash are also dusted with a white substance which I believe to be powdery mildew; could this be related to the problem? I'm spraying with baking soda solution for the powdery mildew. Can I do anything to encourage the development of female blossoms?
