Can I get away with an August crook neck Planting?

While looking for what I can plant in my garden in August, since Late Blight took 9 tomatoes plants from me and left me with a 8ft by 4ft empty raised bed [SO SAD :( ] I came across an interesting article. I talks about planting crook neck squash in August for a harvest before Maine's frost date in October. Has anyone had success with fall planting before? Most things I see do not include squash in August plantings - so I'm wondering if this effort will be useless?
