I'm so confused!!

First time growing pumpkins. The first couple of New England Pie Pumpkin flowers were pollinated about 3 - 4 weeks ago, the resulting pumpkins grew nicely and are starting to turn orange. There are still female flowers appearing on the vines, which are really healthy.

Now, everything I have read about harvesting pumpkins talks about leaving the pumpkins on the vines until the vines start to die and just before the first frost hits. Here in Northern CA, first frost usually doesn't happen until late January or February. The vines will probably stay green for a long time, too, as I get tomatoes well into December.

So I am totally confused as to when I should consider harvesting my (already turning orange)pumpkins. Also, if I keep hand pollinating the female blossoms this late in the season, will I still get more pumpkins?

Thanks for any assistance!

Sandi
