early ripening pumpkins

We have a large fully orange pumpkin and were hoping to have it for Halloween. Should we put off picking it until the plant dies off? We live in California and it has been quite hot. The plant's leaves are green, but yellow-tinged and this plant only has the one pumpkin. We don't really have a dry cool place to keep it (under the house is dry, but about 65 degrees). Anyone with experience and advice to keep this pumpkin from rotting before Halloween would be appreciated.
