SVB resistance & prevention - some ideas and a question

I have had so many different ideas about the total and complete defeat of the SVB in 2010. Mosquito netting -- oh yeah that was a good idea but who is going to work that hard?? After studying the physical properties of different squash plants I find that c.moshata has solid stems -- no space for the SVB worm to get into. Is this the case with solid stem winter squash?? Is the main reason c.moschata is resistant to SVB due to the solid stem??

I hope someone will comment on this. I have the Seminole growing now and it is resistant to everything as far as I can tell. The plant has survived all season. Seminole is c. moschata.

Is c.pepo solid stem also?? Someone please let me know.

Nope C. pepo has hollow stems, very susceptible to SVB, which why so many folks have SVB problems with summer squash, most of which are C.pepo. C maxima is also susceptible, but because of its growth habits possibly slightly less so. C. mixta is not as resistant as C. moschata, but usually hold up pretty well.

Dancinglemons, that's why I hardly grow non-mochatas. I've heard great things about the Seminole pumpkin.

This year I tried another c. moschata, an heirloom from NC, called Old Timey Cornfield Pumpkin. It didn't have any pest problems and produced A LOT (all about 15 lb apiece.! I just have to cut one to see about the quality.
