another question about drying

I understand they should not be dried in the house. Our garage is attached, so I don't want to dry them there. I do have a covered back porch, but it has a weird ceiling that I don't want to put anything into it. I do have hooks along the edges (for flowers), Could I put them in panty hose and hang them there? They would not be completely out of the weather, but a little protected.

Also, my birdhouse gourds (from bought seeds)are not as big as I thought they would be. Will they still get bigger now? We are expecting a scattered light frost this week.
