Can winter squash stay on the vine too long?

Because I planted my winter squash late (June 18), I've been worrying about it being able to mature before the end of the season. Well, we got past the threat of frost, and are enjoying Indian summer. The weather is predicted to stay relatively warm for the next couple of weeks, and I'm wondering if I should leave the squash on the vine during that time.

The butternut vines appear to be in good shape, but the buttercup plants are mildewed and getting limp. The Sweet Dumpling plants are mildewed but not limp, and the Red Kuri plant looks good.

What's the verdict? Should I pick the ones that look ready (woody stem and all), or leave them for awhile longer?

Thanks!
