Pumpkins in a tree

Apparently a bird dropped some of last year's pumpkin seeds around my Japanese Maple tree here in southern California. I saw the vine and meant to take it down, but never got around to it. Now I'll just leave it and hope they don't get too big and break a branch.

I'd look into doing some kind of support, perhaps a sling. When they mature and start drying down it just might happen that they stem break and they come down unexpectedly. My dad once had a 40 pounder up in an apple tree!

I have my gourds in CRW cages, but they always end up growing up into the trees along our property line. The gourds don't break off, I don't know whether pumpkins would.

I stumbled across this video today and I remembered this discussion. This video is of a maxima type pumpkin hanging off a phone line.
