when to harvest ?

I have grown some nice pumpkins this year. 5 large ones in all. out of two plants my girls started from seed. only one turned orange, the rest are turning but not yet. my question is : we have had two heavy frosts , the leaves of the plant have died. it's too late for the plant i'm sure, but should i cover the pumpkins and leave them attached or cut them off ? I really don't mind green pumpkins but wondering if they would turn orange off the vine. thanks !

It is my understanding that if they have started to turn orange, they will continue to do so off the vine.

I have had a totally green pumpkin turn orange on my stoop before. Just leave it in the sun for 7-10 days, but protect them from freezing and they should be fine.

cool sunny days are very good for the not-quite-ripe pumpkins to change color, like automn leaves.
