Is there insect danger to gourds while drying?

In spite of the ground hogs, squirrels, possums, and tornado, I have a few nice very large martin-house shaped gourds. The stems are fully brown, vines are yellow. On one or two I see series of small round dark brown spots, and the green skin right around the spot darker than the rest of the gourd. Could this be from insects? Will I loose these gourds? Should I treat for insects this late?

As far as I know, no insects are interesed in gourds.
The discoloration that you have described is probably due to mold growth, which only affects outer skin and it is normal. Actually, it can create an interesting stained pattern.
But if you want your gourds color be clean, you may wipe/brush them with light chlorine solution or vinegar, to kill the mold. Good air circulation and dry air should be a deterent against mold growth too . Once again. mold does not cause damage to gourds and it only leave some visual marks.

One more thing: a fully mature gourd will not rot. But you have to be patient and let it cure/dry somewher with good air flow.
