prepping pumpkin patch for next year

I'd like to grow a pumpkin patch next year. I've chosen the site (in full sun) and now I'd just like to start getting it ready. Right now it consists of weeds that have been mowed down. My thoughts on how to go about it is to perhaps till the whole thing (or not?) pile a bunch of manure from a horse farm onto it, mix in some of a big pile of leaf mold that I have and then cover the whole thing with black plastic for the winter to keep any weeds from growing up through it and hopefully kill them off for good as well as adding warmth to help the manure age perhaps?

I have no idea if this is a good idea or not! Please offer advice if you have any. Thanks!
