Drying Wine Kettles

I've read wine kettles are harder to dry than most gourd.Problems with spliting and cracking. I have quite a few wine kettles in my garden and I'm worried they won't make it through the winter, I live in the middle of Missouri. My plan is to put them in the barn loft to dry. It has good air flow and maybe not quite as cold in the winter. Or is it necessary to drill a hole to allow the moisture out? Or should I try green scaping some of them? This is my first year for gourds this large so it's all new to me. Thank you!
